I think that learning simplfied and traditional Chinese characters -- in tandem with Japanese -- will complement my Japanese. Is this an effective study method or a bit too roundabout to be of much use?

I think it is, and I'm working on all three. Get a pen pal and a speaking partner and you'll be set. I'm having trouble finding the latter, but my reading and writing skills are improving all the time.
